Ingredients & Substitutions
- White bread - I recommend thick sliced bread, like Texas toast style.
- Large eggs
- Milk
- Deli ham slices - Using leftover ham works great too.
- Deli turkey slices
- Swiss cheese - Gruyère cheese or provolone cheese are both fantastic substitutions.
- Mayonnaise
- Dijon mustard - Honey mustard can be substituted.
- Powdered sugar
- Raspberry jam - Raspberry preserves, strawberry jam, or maple syrup would be great substitutes.
How to make it
To make Monte Cristo sandwiches, begin by warming your slices of ham and turkey in a skillet set over low heat. Once heated through, they can be set aside.
Next, create your egg batter by mixing together the egg and milk. Then, working in batches, dip one side of a slice of bread in the mixture and place in a skillet set over medium heat.
Top the bread with a slice of Swiss cheese, layers of ham and turkey slices, then cover with a lid to allow the cheese to melt as the bread cooks to a golden brown color.
Spread mayo and Dijon mustard over a second slice of bread, and dip the remaining side in the egg mixture. Place it in the skillet and turn the other half of the sandwich over it and continue cooking until the second slice is golden brown.
Serve immediately dusted with powdered sugar and a dollop of raspberry jam.
