    Chopped Italian Sandwich recipe.

The bold flavors of your favorite Italian subs are packed in each perfect bite of this chopped Italian sandwich.

My chopped Italian sandwich recipe transforms the classic Italian submarine sandwich toppings into bite-size morsels, ensuring each tangy mouthful has the perfect mixture of flavors and textures. One bite and this will be your new favorite way to enjoy a classic Italian sub.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

    • Hoagie rolls - Any fresh baked sub roll from the bakery department of your grocery store is fine.
    • Shredded lettuce - Iceberg lettuce is best for this, but romaine lettuce or green leaf lettuce can be substituted.
    • Pepperoni - Any combination of Italian meats or cold cuts can be used.
    • Genoa salami
    • Deli ham
    • Provolone cheese - Mozzarella cheese is also great. Parmesan cheese can be added in addition, as well.
    • Roma tomatoes - Vine ripened tomatoes can be substituted.
    • Banana peppers - Pepperoncini peppers can be substituted.
    • Red onions
    • Mayo
    • Extra virgin olive oil
    • Red wine vinegar - You can substitute Italian dressing for the vinegar and olive oil.
    • Dried Italian seasoning - Dried oregano is a good substitution.
    • Fresh ground black pepper
    • Table salt
    • Optional additions include black olives and sweet cherry peppers.

    How to make it

    Making chopped sandwiches.

Using a large cutting board, chop the deli meats, cheese, tomatoes, and banana peppers into small pieces, then place in a large mixing bowl. Combine with the sliced red onion, mayo, olive oil, vinegar, Italian seasoning, black pepper, and salt.

Once the sub mixture is well combined, divide it among 4 hoagie rolls and serve this delicious sandwich immediately.

    Storing Leftovers

For the best texture, it is not recommended to make these chopped sandwiches in advance. The vinegar will soften the lettuce if it sits for extended periods of time.

However, if you wish to prepare your chopped Italian subs in advance, I recommend storing the creamy dressing mixture separately from the meat and vegetables. Keep everything in an airtight container, then combine the ingredients immediately prior to serving.

    Equipment

    • Large Bowl

    Ingredients

    • 4 hoagie rolls (8" long)
    • 2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
    • 4 ounces pepperoni
    • 4 ounces Genoa salami
    • 4 ounces deli ham
    • 5 ounces provolone cheese (approximately 8 slices)
    • 2 roma tomatoes
    • ⅓ cup banana peppers
    • ¼ cup thinly sliced red onions (thinly sliced)
    • ¼ cup mayonnaise
    • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
    • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
    • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 pinch salt

    Instructions

    • Chop pepperoni, salami, ham, cheese, tomatoes, and banana peppers into ½" pieces.
    • Place all ingredients in a large bowl and mix to combine.
    • Fill each hoagie roll with the sandwich mixture and serve immediately.

    Notes

For the best texture, I like to lightly toast my sub rolls. However, this step is optional.
