    Old fashioned chocolate pie.

    Ingredients Needed

    • Sugar
    • Cocoa powder
    • Cornstarch
    • Salt
    • Egg yolks
    • Whole Milk
    • Unsalted Butter
    • Vanilla Extract

    The Pie Crust

To be a true old fashioned homemade chocolate pie you need to make your own pie crusts. After all, grandma didn't buy storebought crust! However, if you decide to cheat, this recipe will still work great with a prepared crust from the grocery store. Otherwise, you can use the homemade pie crust recipe below:

    1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
    ½ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter, diced into ¼-inch cubes
    ¼ cup ice water

Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl and add the cubed butter. Cut the butter into the mixture until everything is small crumbles. Slowly add water, a little at a time, incorporating it into the flour mixture until it holds together. Do not use all of the water if you don't need to!

Shape the dough into a ball and flatten with a rolling pin to form a 9 inch pie crust. Add the dough to a pie pan and pierce the bottom of the dough with a fork to allow air to escape then bake the pie shell in a 425 degree oven for 10 minutes, or until crisp and golden brown. Now it is ready to be loaded with that sweet chocolate filling!

    How to make it

The first step to make this old fashioned chocolate pie recipe is to mix the dry ingredients. Combine sugar, cocoa powder, salt and cornstarch in a mixing bowl or medium saucepan, then stir in the milk and egg yolks.

Set the heat to medium and bring your saucepan to a simmer on the stove top while stirring. Continue to gently simmer for approximately seven minutes, or until thickened to a pudding consistency. Continue to stir during this process to prevent scorching on the bottom of the pan.

Next, add the butter and vanilla extract to the chocolate pudding mixture. Stir it in then pour the hot filling into a prepared nine-inch pie crust. Place your chocolate pie in the refrigerator to cool completely for at least four hours, then slice and serve.

    How to store your pie

Store leftovers of your pie in the refrigerator covered in plastic wrap to prevent odors from seeping into the pie. Enjoy the pie within five days for maximum freshness.

I recently made a chocolate pie with pretty much this exact recipe, EXCEPT I discovered I was low on milk, so I made up the rest with almond milk. Cooked the filling just as you describe, and it thickened nicely. BUT when I took it out after chilling, the filling was basically thick chocolate soup. SO disappointing. Any thoughts on why almond milk didn’t work?? (And thanks … now I want chocolate pie again!)
