Ingredients

  • 4 slices thick cut bread
  • 1 cup heavy cream Can substitute 1 cup milk mixed with 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Serving

  • Maple syrup
  • Butter
  • Fresh fruit
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl combine your heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  • Heat your griddle to 350 degrees, or set a nonstick skillet over medium heat, and grease the surface with butter.
  • Dredge each slice of bread into the wet mixture for a couple of seconds, ensuring the entire slice is covered in batter. Let any excess batter drip off and then place on the hot griddle.
  • Cook the soaked bread until it turns golden brown, then flip and cook the second side until it turns golden brown as well. Then remove the French toast from the griddle and serve with a drizzle of maple syrup and your choice of toppings.

Notes

It is best if your bread is slightly stale. You can either let it sit out on the kitchen counter uncovered overnight, or LIGHTLY toast it in your toaster to dry it out. Using stale bread gives the French toast better texture and prevents it from being overly soggy.
If you do not have heavy cream on hand you can mix one cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to thicken it similarly to heavy cream. In a pinch, you can just use milk without cornstarch. The batter will be thinner, but the recipe will still work (a thicker batter is best because more seasoning will stick to the toast).
